LeBron, Heat rest up for Game 5 with Pacers

On the plane ride home from Indiana, Miami guard Dwyane Wade was watching a LeBron James highlight tape. It was otherwise known as Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.
The Heat were still marveling Monday at James' effort the previous day in Indiana, when the NBA's reigning MVP had 40 points, 18 rebounds and nine assists - "video game-like," was how Wade described it - to help his team knot its East series with the Pacers at two games apiece. Game 5 is Tuesday night in Miami, and the Heat know they probably can't expect James to fill the box score that way again anytime soon.
After all, no one had done that in a playoff game since Elgin Baylor, 51 years ago.
But if nothing else, the home-court advantage is back with the Heat, who trailed by 10 points in the third quarter Sunday before the game -- and maybe the series -- swung Miami's way, with James doing the conducting.
Those things James did Sunday - he played 44 minutes and grabbed nine rebounds in the fourth quarter alone, matching what anyone else on the floor did in the entirety of Game 4 - took a toll. As James finished shooting free throws on the Heat practice court Monday, he looked toward assistant coach Bob McAdoo and yawned. He walked around slowly. Then he yawned again.
So, LeBron, how were you feeling after Game 4?
"I don't have any," James deadpanned. "It's definitely going to be a recovery and mental day for me."
It was pretty much the same thinking Monday in Indianapolis, where the Pacers spent time before their flight to Miami lamenting that they wasted a chance to take command of the series, but at the same time finding some solace in the fact that they have already won once on the Heat home floor in these playoffs.
The Pacers lost by 35 in Miami in January, and have been outscored by a total of eight points in three games there since.
"We're ready to go," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "We still have a great deal of belief. They haven't beaten our best."
The Heat could say the same thing, after losing Games 2 and 3 without Chris Bosh, who is still rehabbing his strained abdominal muscle and will miss his fourth straight game Tuesday, with no return yet in sight. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said it's "too early to tell" if Bosh could return later in this series.
But clearly, the Pacers saw the MVP's best on Sunday.
James and Wade scored 38 consecutive Miami points in one stretch. A series with plenty of bravado to that point - Indiana's Danny Granger has gotten technicals in three straight games, Pacers reserve Lance Stephenson riled the Heat by making choking signs that were captured by television cameras in Game 3 and Heat forward Juwan Howard approached Stephenson before Game 4 to let him know Miami didn't appreciate the gesture - was taken over by a star.
Wade finished with 30 points and nine rebounds, a huge bounce-back effort after his disaster of a Game 3. Udonis Haslem scored 14 points and needed only six field-goal attempts to get there, then needed nine stitches to close a gash over his right eye.
Big games for both. Next to James' line, they were practically afterthoughts. James scored or assisted on 62 of Miami's 101 points.
"We had two days to prepare," Howard said. "We had an opportunity to watch a lot of film and see some things as a team that we did wrong, what we could do to do better. Then I'm sure (James and Wade) had a chance to look at it individually ... but you give us two days to prepare, two days to rest our bodies, then I'm not surprised by their performance."
The Pacers did their part to help Miami's comeback on Sunday.
Roy Hibbert finished with 10 points and nine rebounds, but the 7-foot-2 center also was slowed by foul trouble, as was forward David West. That, and Indiana's defense slipped at the absolute worst time: The Pacers entered Sunday having allowed only nine 30-point games all season, but by day's end, that list had 11 entries with James and Wade both getting there.
"I thought we'd been doing a good job," West said. "Yesterday was the first time they got easy stuff. Wade got easy dunks, easy layups. LeBron the same thing. I thought up to that point they were scrapping and fighting for those ... It's just a lot of self-inflicted wounds that are correctable."
If the Pacers are going to pull this series out, those corrections will need to come in Miami against a team that finished the regular season tied with San Antonio for the NBA's best home mark.
"I think we're really not worried about home-court advantage," Granger said. "We're a good road team, and we're going to go down there and try to get the win."
There was some consolation for Indiana in that it took phenomenal efforts from James and Wade for Miami to win by eight points in Game 4. A Heat team that scored 75 points in both Game 2 and Game 3 got nearly that many from two players Sunday.
The Pacers don't expect that to happen again. Neither does James.
"All the great players, if they could do it every night, they would do it every night," James said. "If you could have 40 and 20 and 10, you'd do it every night. But it's not realistic."
Still, it was the reality on Sunday. And that's why Miami's reality on Monday was that the reigning East champs need only to hold home court to advance.
"We expect their best and their best is good enough to win," Wade said. "We've seen that. ... It's a big game -- for both teams."

LeBron James wins 3rd MVP

LeBron is one of my favorite player. So excited to find out that LeBron has won his 3rd MVP in 4 years. Congrats for him.
Heat forward LeBron James is the NBA's MVP for a third time, putting him alongside some of the game's all-time greats.
A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press that James will be announced Saturday as this year's winner of the league's top individual honor, and that he'll be formally presented with the trophy by Commissioner David Stern on Sunday afternoon before Miami hosts Indiana in Game 1 of an Eastern Conference semifinal series.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the league has not announced the results. Late Friday night, the Heat released plans for a 1 p.m. Saturday event on the court at AmericanAirlines Arena so the team and the NBA could "make a major announcement."
James is winning the award for the third time in four seasons. Only seven other players - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Moses Malone - have at least three MVP trophies.
James said last week that while another MVP award "would be amazing and would be humbling," it's not what drives him. In his ninth season, James still has not won an NBA title and it's clear that, although he wanted to reclaim the MVP trophy, winning a championship is far and away his top basketball priority.
"What I'm all about is team and ever since I was a kid, I was always taught it's team first," James told the AP on Friday. "My first time playing basketball, we went undefeated and won a championship and Frank Walker Sr. gave everyone on the team a MVP trophy. Right then and there, I knew that this is what I wanted to do. I wanted to see my teammates reap the benefits as well."
Abdul-Jabbar won the MVP six times, Jordan and Russell five times each, Chamberlain four times. After this weekend, they'll be the only players with more than James.
"I think he's probably as committed as he's ever been in his career," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said this week, asked to summarize James' season. "And he's always been committed. ... We all respond to his energy on the court."
James averaged 27.1 points, 7.9 rebounds and 6.2 assists - making him only the fourth player with those totals in at least two different seasons, according to STATS LLC, joining Oscar Robertson (five times), John Havlicek (twice) and Bird (twice).
Add James' 53 percent shooting and 1.9 steals per game into the mix, and the club gets even more exclusive. Only Jordan had a season with numbers exceeding what James did this season in those categories - 1988-89, when he averaged 32.5 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and 2.9 steals on 54 percent shooting.
And Jordan wasn't even the MVP that year, the trophy going to Johnson instead.
"I think LeBron is an MVP candidate every year," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said last month. "It's just who he is. He only does everything. So I don't know what more you can ask from him.
"LeBron, to me, is the favorite every year," Rivers added. "The years he doesn't win it, it'll usually be because people are just tired of voting for him. Statistically, if you go all-around game, I don't know how you don't vote for him every year."
The MVP votes will be revealed Saturday. Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant was thought to be James' top competition for the MVP, after winning the NBA scoring title for a third straight season. Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers, Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers and Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs also had seasons that generated some MVP buzz.
James' teammates also lobbied for him to be defensive player of the year this season, noting that probably no one else in the league routinely plays four positions on offense while sometimes being asked to guard anyone from a point guard to a center on defense. James was fourth in that balloting.
"LeBron has been unbelievable," Heat guard Dwyane Wade said before the playoffs. "He's done it at both ends, every night, offensively and defensively."
Last season's MVP, Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls, appeared in only 39 of 66 regular-season games this season because of a variety of injuries. His season ended in Game 1 of the Bulls' first-round playoff series against Philadelphia, when he tore a knee ligament.
Many in the Heat organization thought James should have won the award a year ago as well, when he dealt with constant fallout from "The Decision" to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers as a free agent and sign with Miami, where he, Wade and Chris Bosh formed a "Big Three" that has been celebrated at home and reviled in just about every other NBA arena.
James has said he played more out of anger and to silence criticism than anything else last season. So this season, his mindset changed, with him trying to revert to old ways, first as a superstar-in-waiting at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, then during his seven seasons with the Cavaliers.
It apparently worked.
"I wanted to get back to who I was as a person," James said.
It's the first time that the Heat will be hosting an MVP celebration.
Shaquille O'Neal won his only MVP award before coming to Miami, and James won the 2009 and 2010 trophies with the Cavaliers - collecting 225 of a possible 244 first-place votes in those seasons.
The NBA MVP trophy is named for Maurice Podoloff, the league's first commissioner. Heat assistant coach Bob McAdoo won the award once, for the Buffalo Braves in 1975.

LeBron James for NBA MVP!!

Even if you despise everything about LeBron Raymone James, you'd have a hard time arguing against his case for KIA Race to the MVP honors in a court of basketball law.
Whatever so-called facts you tried to present would be trumped by a series of metrics that would blow your case to bits. By virtually every measure, James put together the most impressive statistical regular season (production and efficiency-wise) the league has seen in recent memory.
His closing argument to the regular season -- 32 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two blocks in a win over Houston Wednesday -- was a fitting capper for a fantastic campaign. James averaged 27.1 points, 7.9 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 1.9 steals and shot a 53 percent from the floor, 36 percent from beyond the 3-point line. James refined his already wickedly versatile game by taking fewer 3-point shots and crafting a post game to go along with all of his other obvious advantages over the competition., making him the league's most unstoppable force on both ends of the floor.
That's not the only reason he edged Kevin Durant at the tape for the top spot in the final KIA Race to the MVP Ladder of this season and will get at least this one vote in the official ballting for the league's top individual award. But it's a great start.
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra is biased, but he made a compelling, stat-free case of his own to reporters before the Heat's regular season finale against Washington.
"Part of LeBron's greatness is he cannot be defined by a statistic or a number," Spoelstra said. "It's the fact that he can be great at so many different things, and on both ends of the court. ... What he has allowed us to do is to use the versatility of the rest of the roster," Spoelstra said, "by playing him wherever we need to.
"He'll patch it up and fill in all the gaps to make it work. That's something nobody else does. On any given night, who else can be the best point guard or the best center or the best two or the best three or the best four?"
The versatility James displayed in this, his ninth season in the league, was truly remarkable. If someone needed to be shut down, regardless of position, the Heat called on James to handle it. And yet he scored at least 30 points this season 24 times, matching Kobe Bryant for the league-lead in that category as well.
He's already been confirmed by a jury of his peers, inside and outside of his own locker room. "Kevin Durant and the Thunder have had a great year and played great. I just think LeBron has had a special, special season," Heat forward Shane Battier told theMiami Herald when asked who was deserving of the league MVP. "Some of my boys on Houston [where Battier played before] just shook their heads and said, 'That guy is animal.' I'm like: 'I know. That's what I've been telling you guys.'"
Even Durant, who spent time doing two-a-day workouts with James during the offseason, admitted that James has a ridiculously strong case for the top honor.
"He deserves all the love [for MVP]," Durant told the Oklahoman.
Not even that gracious concession from his chief competitor for the award will silence those who believe James is undeserving because he hasn't mastered the art of closing out games the way Bryant orDwyane Wade have.
They'll point to the one glaring omission on his resume, a Larry O'Brien trophy, as to why he can't be held in such regal esteem just yet.
Well, even James acknowledges as much. He realizes that whatever honors he drags into the postseason, they'll fade if he can't drag the Heat to The Finals and finish the deal this time. He'll need to lock down The Finals MVP to rid himself of all of the haters.
